Skin prep: the two minutes that matter

What you do to your skin before spraying decides how a perfume opens: two minutes, done right, before you reach for it.

The bottle isn't the variable

Two people, same perfume, same number of sprays, and it wears completely differently on each of them by evening. The bottle is identical. The skin underneath it is not, and neither is what each person did to that skin in the two minutes before spraying.

Clean, not stripped

Perfume needs a surface to hold onto. Freshly showered skin, still slightly damp, with open pores and a thin layer of moisture, takes a spray better than dry skin does. This is why a scent applied right after a shower tends to hold closer to the day you expected. But skin just scrubbed raw with a heavily scented soap is fighting your perfume before it starts; the soap's own fragrance competes for the same space.

Moisturise first, unscented

An unscented, or very lightly scented, moisturiser on pulse points before you spray gives the perfume something to sit in rather than skin that dries the alcohol off in minutes. This matters more in Indian summers, where office AC dries skin through the day and a sprayed-and-forgotten wrist can feel thin by 3pm. A moisturised base holds the composition together for longer without adding its own competing scent to the mix.

The patch test, first

Before any of this becomes a habit, test the perfume itself on a small patch of skin (the inner forearm is easiest) and wait 24 hours before wearing it properly. This applies to every fragrance, not just a new one: skin chemistry and sensitivities are personal, and a note that sits beautifully on one person can irritate another. If you notice redness, itching or discomfort at any point, wash it off and stop using it. This is a comfort check, not a diagnosis. See a doctor if the reaction is more than mild.

Two minutes of preparation (clean skin, a little unscented moisture, no interference) decides more about how a perfume performs than the spray count does. Once your skin is ready, the weather outside it is the next variable. See Wearing scent through the Indian year.
