How to gift perfume without guessing

The wrong question

You are standing in front of a shelf, phone in hand, scrolling through photos of someone you like enough to buy a gift for but not well enough to know what they wear. The question in your head is "what's their favourite scent?" It is the wrong question. You do not know the answer, and neither, most of the time, do they.

Ask that question and you end up buying for yourself, the bottle you'd want, projected onto them. It is the single most common way a good gift becomes a bottle that sits, unopened, at the back of a drawer.

Three questions that actually work

Skip taste. Read the occasion, the wardrobe, and the weather instead.

Occasion tells you the register. A colleague's farewell wants something quiet and safe. A wedding gift can afford to be a little more expressive. A first date has no business being on this list at all.

Wardrobe tells you the person, without needing to ask them anything. Someone who dresses cleanly, in neutrals, rarely wants a loud fragrance. However much you personally love the loud one. Someone who leans bold in colour and cut usually welcomes a scent with the same nerve.

Weather tells you what will actually work. A heavy, resinous scent gifted for a Delhi summer will sit wrong on the skin before lunch. Match the season the gift will be worn in, not the season you're buying it in.

When you're still unsure

Some giftees give you nothing to go on: a new colleague, a distant cousin, someone whose wardrobe you've seen exactly once. That is not a failure of research. It is a signal to stop guessing and hand them the choice instead.

This is the one gift that cannot go wrong: give six scents rather than one, and let them find their own answer over a week of wearing each. You lose nothing by not picking for them, and you gain the one thing a single bottle can never give: certainty that they'll like at least one.
